Calorie Counting For Dummies (like me!)

Whenever I hear the words "counting calories" my eyes usually glaze over. This task sounds so incredibly daunting. But after talking to my sister-in-law I decided I needed to try it out for myself.

It is amazing. I've only been doing it a couple of days now, but I can already see a difference in what I choose to eat. I am understanding better which calories will give me energy, and which calories are just a big waste.

And to make the daunting task as easy as can be - check out sparkpeople.com - it is user friendly and best of all - free! And if you're pregnant, or trying to lose the post baby weight - you can check out their sister site - babyfit.com.

Love these sites! Are any of you calorie counters?

  1. my problem with that kind of thing is I only eat one meal a day in which I can look on the box and see the info--cereal. Other than that, I'm eating leftovers, quesadillas, smoothies, and whatever I made for dinner... so it's hard to tell! Sure, I can GUESS the skookie I'm about to devour isn't good for me, but I don't have any concrete info.

  2. I make most of my food too - you can search by ingredient. For example - I had a turkey sandwich today. So I found the type of bread, I put in 1/2 Tbps miracle whip, 1 tsp yellow mustard...all you have to do is search for the food & select the quantity - it has the calorie info already plugged in.

  3. Paul lost a ton of weight by watching calories, that and cutting out sugar. (50 lbs to be exact! :D) He used an iPhone app called "Lose It!" It's very handy because you can make your own recipes and save them for the meals you make most.

  4. i agree, i have a hard time counting calories because a lot of what we whip up around here is just a "dash" of this and that. i use calorieking on my computer, it's still really interesting to get an idea of how much those candy bars are costing me.
