DIY: Pine Cone Wreath

Months back while on a walk Little Miss and I picked up a whole bag full of pine cones for a family reunion kids project - as family reunions go, they didn't get used. This bag has been sitting in my crafting room for awhile. Wasn't sure what to with them, but I couldn't just throw them out! Finally it came to me...a wreath!

When we gathered these pine cones they were originally for bird feeders, so I was looking for large ones. If I'd been collecting with a wreath in mind I would have gathered much smaller pine cones so I could situate them closer together leaving less gaps. But I still think the wreath turned out great! Especially considering the whole thing cost me a whopping $1.50 to make! Here's how...

First I went to the store to buy one of these 18" Styrofoam wreaths...

Which I didn't get because it was a ridiculous $11.99!! So I opted to make my own frame for much less. To begin I laid out my pine cones on a flat surface to get a general idea of how large it would be.

Then I used hot glue and some craft sticks to form a simple frame for the inner circle base. Holding it up to my pine cones to double check it every once in awhile.

I also made an outline of my outer circle (sorry for the fuzzy pic)...

Then I started bulking up my inner circle by overlaying and gluing on more craft sticks for extra strength...

And did the same with the outer circle until it felt sturdy.

That should do it...

Now to connect the two circles with some craft sticks...

And more...

Until it felt solid enough...

After quickly painting the frame brown in case any of it showed through, I started gluing on the innner circle, nestling the pine cones close together...

And the outer circle...

Done! Almost...

I used 1/4 yard fabric to hang my wreath. It adds a splash of color and can easily be replaced come December for something more Christmasy - now if only my door wasn't a boring brown. The brown of the pine cones would be such a great contrast on another color of door - but we rent, so I can't really paint it. =)

Have fun making your own wreaths!

  1. Nice! I love how you made your own wreath form. I'll have to remember that.

  2. That looks great! Wreath forms are totally a waste of money. You always have to have a coupon or wait for a sale and even then they are over priced. You are genius for making your own!

  3. I like the way you did it way more than the styrofoam! It's cool because you can see the door through it! Way cool!
    Thanks for sharing!
